Intertextuality - Drake

Intertextuality

The definition of intertexuality is shaping a texts meaning to something else. In my own words I would say intertexuality means interpreting a text into something else. In this case I will be analysing the amount of intertexuality in music videos and see how they compare and contrast to other videos that possibly may have inspired them greatly or took great influences off. This may contain the audio and how the music sounds compared to a song that is very similar. It may also entail how the video is shot depending on what angles the shots are taken from, they may have similar narratives to other videos that they may have took inspiration from.

Intertextuality has become quite common and sometimes lead to legal cases of bands and artists suing other bands or artists on copyright grounds due to copying or stealing of material such as songs graphics and general ideas that they may have used as an influence and the original artist may have taken offence or was genuinely annoyed or disappointed that someone had stolen their work and music.

An example of intertexuality in the music industry today is the comparison between the music videos of Drake and Rihanna.

Drake

Drake produced the song "Hotline Bling" and Rihanna produced the song "This is what you came for". Drake released his song on his album "Views" released on the 29th of April 2016. The song has a very abstract music video and stars Drake singing in a huge cube that is forever changing colours whether it be primary or secondary colours. The main colours seem to be red, yellow, purple, blue, white, green and pink. Drake is also dancing around and utilizing the space he has in the cube to dance about and look good for the camera.

This is a shot of him in the large cube with the yellow light effect around it. I think this colour scheme works very well for Drake as it contrasts very well with the clothes he is wearing for example to big red coat.

This is another shot of him in the cube but with a different colour scheme. I think this colour scheme looks very appealing to the target audience as Drake is renouned for looking good and wearing designer clothes in his music videos and in general. I also believe that the use of these colours such as baby blue and baby pink add to the aesthetic of the video, again appealing to his varied and large target audience he is trying to impress so gain more views and fame.

I will post the next intertexuality post separately about Rihanna and her hit song. Afterwards I will put up a post comparing them both and how they are similar in audio and visuals as well as sound effects and lighting.
