Carol Vernalis Theory

Image
Carol Vernallis' theory is based around four key concepts to all of her work on how music videos are made and structured. These four concepts are : - Narrative - Editing - Camera Movement - Diegesis She applies these concepts and studies to music videos and breaks them apart to analyse them to prove her theory correct. In this post i will do the same and break down and analyse the music video to the hit Oasis song, Supersonic. This particular Oasis song has probably the most editing in an Oasis music video along with Champagne Supernova with the good idea of all of the spirals in the background as Liam Gallagher is sat on the a chair singing straight to the camera with the green screen behind him. Supersonic is one of Oasis' top and most loved songs by their audiences and varied audiences overall. The video starts on a shot of Liam walking through a puddle however the shot is upside down. This is a perfect use of camera movement and it follows Liams shoes walking...

Website or Avert Analysis

Image
As it is getting up to the Christmas time of year, i chose the John Lewis Christmas advert from last year to analyse for this task instead of a website as i find it more interesting taking apart an advert and finding out why certain dramatic techniques are put into place and how they are beneficial in media terms and in business terms, or in this case how the adverts are beneficial to the sales John Lewis obtains around the Christmas season. The John Lewis advert from 2016 was a very iconic ad. Every John Lewis advert is heavily studied and spent upon every year without fail, it is hugely thought about all year round by a group of producers and writers. The ad is designed to play on the heart strings of the intended audience and have some sort of sentimental value to it. In my eyes, the advert is conveying the problem of elderly people being alone at Christmas, a very saddening subject for everyone. Statistically, 1.7 million people in the United Kingdom over the age of seventy five ...

Marcelo Vasco Links To Francisco Goya

Image
The iconic painting of "Saturn Devouring His Sons" painted by Francisco Goya in the 1700s before being deemed enemy of the state for his paintings by the Spanish inquisition, is a huge influence on the work of Marcelo Vasco on the 16th studio album by Slayer, Repentless. Here is the painting next to the Repentless album cover. It is evident why I have this opinion on Vasco being heavily influenced by the work of Francisco Goya on his piece. Both faces on the images of Saturn and Jesus look heavily distorted and abnormal, in turn, connoting the abstract style that Slayer have always had throughout their on-going career. Slayers lyrics highlight some adult themes as they are one of the biggest thrash metal bands of all time. They are closely similar to a band called "Death". They are also notorious for their obscene and sometimes disturbing album covers. One such album cover is on the album "Leprosy".  The album includes songs such as ...

Close Album Cover Analysis - Slayer - Repentless

Image
This album cover is very close to me as the first concert I ever attended was a Slayer one on the "Repentless" tour in the September of 2015. There is so much to this album cover however it could be deemed as offensive to some older, old fashioned or more religious audiences due to the graphic nature of Jesus being grievously tortured. This is Slayers sixteenth studio album released on the eleventh of September 2015. Firstly I am going to talk about the huge circle with the swords cutting through it making a pentagram or satanic star in the background. This has been an on-going theme since their debut album back in 1983. This is sort of their logo just as Iron Maiden have Eddie the Head and Motorhead have Snaggletooth as I have stated in my earlier posts. However as technology has developed so has the appearance of Slayers albums, this is the first album where the star has been on fire and glowing orange and gold due to the flames, this suites the rest of the album...

Album Covers - 2 - Motorhead - March or Die

Image
This is the album cover for the 1992 Motorhead album entitled "March or Die". personally this is in my top five albums of all time, the music is fantastic and definitely Motorhead being at their best. The cover is so aggressive and perfectly portrays Motorheads attitude and outlook on how they viewed everything in their lives, especially lead singer and bassist, Lemmy Kilmister (R.I.P). Such as Iron Maiden have Eddie the Head as their iconic mascot, Motorhead have Snaggletooth. Snaggletooth is the half pig half man creature seen on almost every album cover apart from the iconic "Ace of Spades" album cover. This mascot represents Motorhead perfectly as has the skull of a man with the teeth of a beast representing the nasty and sometimes ruthless attitude Motorhead possessed before breaking up in 2015 due the death of Lemmy. The use of the horns/tusks protruding from the skulls jaw looks very gritty and intimidating if you will, this compliments the crossbon...

Album Covers - 1 - Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time

Image
This album is an Iron Maiden album released on the 29th of September in 1986, the same year hugely popular albums were released by the other big metal bands such as Metallica releasing "Ride The Lightning". The typical features of this album cover are the same as the rest of the iron Maiden albums with their mascot "Eddie the Head" being the present centre piece. More examples of Eddie being the centre piece and main attraction are albums such as "The Number of the Beast" and "Powerslave". A typical Iron Maiden trend is to base an album around a certain theme,  for example this one is based heavily on time travel and the idea of future and past. One of the songs on the album is called Alexander the Great, who reigned in 334BC whereas another song is called Stranger in a Strange Land, which talks about a "world of ice and snow". These two contrasts fit together perfectly and immediately hit the theme of time travel and the very abs...

What Makes An Effective Music Video

Image
An effective music must be enticing to an audience or a target audience and include what the target audience will enjoy viewing to keep them watching and happy. One thing that makes an effective music video is a good narrative. Or a story behind the music. A good example of this is Paloma Faiths "Only love can hurt like this". The narrative is Paloma Faith being in love with a man and they cannot be together but the narrative is so in depth. There are parts when she is underwater and drowning. This gives off the idea that she cannot take the heartbreak and the pain from whatever might be going on in the relationship. Therefore i believe that the shots of her drowning is very good use of symbolism which is very effective in a music video. Another key factor to an effective music videos are the lights are camera movement. Lighting is key as it adds feel to the music video and potentially mood lighting depending on what the content if the video is. For example, a video ...

Autuer Analysis of One - Metallica

Image
The music video to the hit song by Metallica, One, is one of the most abstract videos by the biggest thrash metal band of all time. It is shot in all black and white and white which is very different due to the sad nature of the song. The song is about an injured soldier who is dying in a hospital bed after sustaining very fatal injuries and the song are his last words to himself and father.  The opening line is " I cant remember anything, dont know if this is truth or real, deep down inside I feel this pain, take my life from me ".  During these lines being sung, the white and black tint on the camera starts creating a sense of sadness and blankness to the scene and opening shot. This shot is also a close up of rhythm guitarist and lead singer, James Hetfield as he closes his eyes and sings the depressing lyrics, The way Michael Salomon has asked James to close his eyes adds more depth and emotion to the opening intro of the song in turn, allowing the target audience to ...

Madonna - Frozen

Image
This is a screenshot for the song, Frozen by Madonna. This is a clear example of an Auteur video as it sticks to a certain theme the whole way through. The video was directed by British artist Chris Cunningham, the music video for Frozen was filmed ne ar Cuddeback lake in Mojave Desert in California during January 7th to the 11th 1998. The video is very abstract and very different to what Madonna was usually doing and being filmed like in her music videos. She was normally very poppy and very generic whereas Chris Cunningham is a very abstract and different from the norm.  One example of his style being very out of the ordinary is use of the crows in this video. A crow is a very abstract creature and is represented as evil in many movies and films including the Resident Evil franchise and Game of Thrones. This worked well in the Frozen video because it goes against what Madonna is like usually but she is still very talented and creative in her work and somehow bent her sty...

Autuer Definiton

Image
The definition of an Auteur director is a director who follows a certain theme and express their feelings in their film or music videos.  This theory is of french decent and dates back to the nineteen fourties when film first started coming into play as the big screen was getting bigger.  The definition of autuer is  a film director who influences their films so much that they rank as their author .  Examples of renouned autuer directors are the two huge directors Alfred Hitchcock, creator of the first huge horror film, Psycho. The other most famous director is Stanley Kubrick, creator of timeless classics like Full Metal Jacket, Clockwork Orange and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. They are renouned as all of their films have the same feel and go about everything in the same way . Most films have the same themes and nature about them and are always shot in a similar way. For example, Stanley Cubricks Clockwork Orange and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest...
