Autuer Analysis of One - Metallica

Related imageThe music video to the hit song by Metallica, One, is one of the most abstract videos by the biggest thrash metal band of all time. It is shot in all black and white and white which is very different due to the sad nature of the song. The song is about an injured soldier who is dying in a hospital bed after sustaining very fatal injuries and the song are his last words to himself and father.

The opening line is "I cant remember anything, dont know if this is truth or real, deep down inside I feel this pain, take my life from me".

During these lines being sung, the white and black tint on the camera starts creating a sense of sadness and blankness to the scene and opening shot. This shot is also a close up of rhythm guitarist and lead singer, James Hetfield as he closes his eyes and sings the depressing lyrics, The way Michael Salomon has asked James to close his eyes adds more depth and emotion to the opening intro of the song in turn, allowing the target audience to feel something for the soul of the soldier as he is breathing his last breaths.

The whole video is shot in a abandoned warehouse/air base which makes a lot of sense considering the song is about the aftermath and effect of war on human life so the idea of the whole venue being derelict co asides the black and white tint on the video as it makes everywhere look baron and boring but the music brings the life to all of the scenes within the video.

This is a a shot of the Warehouse/Hangar that Michael Solamon chose to shoot "One" in.

  1. you have made some nice points on the bleakness of the lyrics and the corrrilation between this dystopian view of the world and the maCARBRE AND DERPRESSING LYRICS. Could have used more media language to look ate the codes,( gesture codes, language codes and dress codes)
