Madonna - Frozen

This is a screenshot for the song, Frozen by Madonna. This is a clear example of an Auteur video as it sticks to a certain theme the whole way through.

The video was directed by British artist Chris Cunningham, the music video for Frozen was filmed ne
ar Cuddeback lake in Mojave Desert in California during January 7th to the 11th 1998. The video is very abstract and very different to what Madonna was usually doing and being filmed like in her music videos. She was normally very poppy and very generic whereas Chris Cunningham is a very abstract and different from the norm.

One example of his style being very out of the ordinary is use of the crows in this video. A crow is a very abstract creature and is represented as evil in many movies and films including the Resident Evil franchise and Game of Thrones. This worked well in the Frozen video because it goes against what Madonna is like usually but she is still very talented and creative in her work and somehow bent her style to suite that of Chris Cunningham. Madonna is normally seen in very bright fluorescent clothes in her videos as she is one of the biggest pop sensations of the century so to see her in a lot of black and dark clothes may have seemed a bit weird to her standard target audience but with the help of Chris Cunningham and his Autuer style of production and directing he influenced Madonna and added more diversity into her genre and end products.

  1. again when analysing a video we need to be talking in terms of the mis en scene, and codes and conventions in order to describe why you think he is an auture artist
