What Makes An Effective Music Video

An effective music must be enticing to an audience or a target audience and include what the target audience will enjoy viewing to keep them watching and happy.

One thing that makes an effective music video is a good narrative. Or a story behind the music. A good example of this is Paloma Faiths "Only love can hurt like this". The narrative is Paloma Faith being in love with a man and they cannot be together but the narrative is so in depth. There are parts when she is underwater and drowning. This gives off the idea that she cannot take the heartbreak and the pain from whatever might be going on in the relationship. Therefore i believe that the shots of her drowning is very good use of symbolism which is very effective in a music video.

Another key factor to an effective music videos are the lights are camera movement.

For example, a video of containing a lot of light action is the music video for rock and roll star by Oasis. There is a lot of bright orange and yellow light in strobe, flashing whilst the song is being sung, there is also fades of the light hitting the guitar as Noel Gallagher plays certain notes. The cohesion is fantastic between the lights and key notes and words, such as the chorus. when Liam Gallagher says "Im a rock and roll star!" the yellow light mixes with the orange light to make a very bright orange colour which is known as a colour to connote happiness and bright emotions. Above, is a shot from the Rock n Roll Star music video when the chorus is being sung with the orange and yellow lights behind Liam Gallagher. I also chose this video as an example as this is the song me and Joe will be using in our music video group task.

Camera movement and shots are vital to making an effective music video, without the camera movement and shots the whole video is nothing. The movement of the camera can also influence the other two factors i have stated (lighting and symbolism). In the video to Run Boy Run by Woodkid, there is a child running away from his fear of monsters. The child is constantly running through the video, therefore so must the camera. The video would not look effective if the camera was in the same place all of the time watching the boy run. However the camera is on a track with someone sat behind it (a tracking shot). This makes the video look more effective as we (the audience) go on the journey with the boy and follow him whereever he goes, from a side on angle. This looks very appealing as it looks like a very old retro game such as the original mario games as we follow the character through the levels from a side on perspective. The tracking shot also makes the video more intense and the intended dramatic effect displayed is that of us feeling the childs fear as he runs away from his monsters.

Below is a shot of the boy running in the Run Boy Run video. The crows also link back to the theme of symbolism being effective in music videos as crows are seen to represent evil or darkness or maybe even sadness as i have discussed in my analysis of Chris Cunninghams work on Madonnas, Frozen.
