Intertextuality - Rihanna

In 2016 on April the 29th Rihanna released a video featuring Calvin Harris entitled "This is what you came for".  This song has became very popular since its release and is a known club anthem and has over 1.8 billions views on youtube and over 6 million likes. The song has a very aesthetic music video which has Rihanna in a large cube that is constantly changing colours from bright greens yellows and light blues, all the colours you would assosciate with seeing in a night club. The video has a very prominent theme of star to fan cohesion, in the video Rihanna addresses the audience as the back of the cube falls down and she walks through onto the stage and to address her audience and begin her show.
This is a still I have taken from the video from YouTube. This still allows me to interpret the text and narrative in my own way as I believe that the whole cube changing colour idea may reflect Rihanna's emotions that she may be trying to convey via colour and visual effects. Purple is often associated with luxury and comfort. I believe the reason the lilac and purple background highlights how Rihanna is feeling and her walking through the back of the cube is her breaking free of her emotion into another emotion where she is in front of her fans and most likely feels on top of the world.

This shot is of Rihanna in the cube that changes its colour. The cube fits the needs of the target audience because all of Rihanna's videos have lot of bright lights and brilliant editing in terms of sound effects and visual effects.

  1. Good interpretation Dan. Maybe add more smaller images to show the changes and thsi will add more depth to your analysis.
