Andrew Goodwin Analysis on Music Videos
As she sings the chorus she literally comes into the wide shot on a wrecking ball breaking through walls and debris etc. There are many close ups of her in this video highlighting that she is the centre of attention in the vide0o
There is product placement shown conveyed in the video or a star image motif. It is evident by the image that Miley Cyrus is wearing oxblood Dr Marten boots in the video. She was most likely paid a lot of money by Dr Marten to wear their shoe/boot in her music video that got over nine hundred millions views on youtube and over four millions likes, in turn making Dr Marten more money as the attire worn by Miley Cyrus will appeal to her younger fanbase of 13-15 year olds. The young fanbase may be due to her career in acting, playing the young teenager Hannah Montana on the children channels on television.
The video is very concept based and shies away from any kind of narrative or story line. Due to the self explanatory lyrics it is evident that Miley whats to hit hard at someone or something and her and the producers came up with the idea of using the wrecking ball in the song.
There is a very voyeuristic outlook on the female body in the video is Miley is always shot wearing nearly next to nothing or just underwear and the Dr Marten boots and the video conveys the notion of looking extremely well. Miley is seen as a very seductive woman in the video and has a kind of sex appealing aura about her in it, however today voyeurism is only seen on one side mostly, the female side as men are very rarely and not normally sexualised in music videos.
The use of props also aids the voyeuristic outlook on the video as there is a shot of Miley seductively licking a hammer conveying a strange contrast as hammers are associated with dirt and hard work however Miley sexualises the hammer in turn conforming the Goodwins theory on music videos and voyeurism as well as conforming to modern day gender roles in society and the music business.
