Evaluation Question 1

I have handed in my write ups to question 3 and 4 on technologies and audience feedback.

Question 1: In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I have many media products that i had created including the digipack for the cd that will make our music video more professional looking. The digipack conformed to our psychedelic theme and was created using Photoshop. At first i found the editing side of creating the digipack quite hard and i was not very skilled. However i overcame this challenge by watching tutorials on YouTube which was also a very helpful platform when it came to looking for videos that would later influence the front cover and the face of the digipack. One video that i gained influence off was the Nirvana song, Come As You Are. The song starts in a swimming pool with a gun floating down, we then took influence from the watery theme they had and created a deep sea theme to make it look aesthetically pleasing to our target audience.

On the inside of the digipack there where pictures of green spirals and on the opposite side a picture of the bassist and the guitarist for the band playing a live gig. The green spirals are very recognisable and very common in psychedelic themed music videos such as the song White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. One that was very similar to the song we picked and the style we had adopted was "Champagne Supernova" by Oasis. In the beginning of the video the lead singer is sat in a chair with a spiral moving all around on the green screen behind him. This was a heavy influence on some parts of the video where Joe is singing into the camera with spirals on the green screen behind him. This developed our digipack more as spirals and odd shapes became a key part of any decoration that we had created in including the poster and the website. Existing genre conventions for this psychedelic theme are bright colours and unique patterns that are seen as very eye-catching, in addition to this, all of the general conventions are seen as aesthetically pleasing.

We specifically chose to develop conventions of our themes and influences on the digipack because the research that I had found proved very helpful and made me sprout ideas of my own that can be based on concepts that i have found via my research as well as including audience feedback from questionnaires to help us develop the choices we made on colour, text and font to make our look on the digipack more based on the theme and to hit the target audience expectations.

The poster was another media product that was created. In contrast to the digipack, the poster undertook a different theme all together and challenges common conventions of the music genre. The theme on the poster was one that resembled gig and tour life with a band. The shots were captured in the music room in my school. The main shot is of my peer, Joe, singing into recording equipment as if it was a behind the scenes shot of the band creating a new song. This idea was influenced by music videos such as “A Day In The Life” by The Beatles, which shows them all joking about off set and with the crew who are recording and directing the video, it has a very down to earth feel which conforms to real media products such as posters what our target audience will keep an eye out for, so when they see a shot of the singer recording a song they will be immediately interested on what the poster has to say whether it be tour dates or an album release poster.

The music video is based a lot around fashion and many iconic brands can be seen throughout. Due to our research via questionnaire and cast interview for the video, I discovered certain brands that the audience would like to see and wear regularly. One such brand was Adidas. Adidas was very popular in the nineties when our music video is based around due to the psychedelic nature of the video as psychedelia was a big hype in the nineties especially up north in cities like Liverpool and especially Manchester. One band that we looked at for the music video, The Stone Roses, were very popular in the nineties. The singer, Ian Brown, has a very wide range of Adidas merchandise and quoted “If you could see my Adidas collection you would be sick!” Due to icons from the nineties wearing Adidas it became very fashionable quick and still is today. Adidas was included within our video a lot as it fits the conventions of the historical content of the music also complimented by the relatability of the target audience who were young around the time of the nineteen nineties.

In the video Adidas is seen a lot, another reason Adidas was included so much was because it will make the “band” look more professional due to the fact it looks as if Adidas is being promoted as a use of brand promotion from Adidas in our video like in the J Hus video, Samantha, where the two artists, J Hus and Dave, wear a lot of Stone Island to promote it as J Hus is known now worldwide for his music. The use of a fake brand promotion looked more realistic and appealing to the target audience and meets audience expectations on the fashion and clothing side of the video.
